Timeline of Explorers and Exploration, Ages 9-12

Timeline of Explorers and Exploration, Ages 9-12

At Alison’s Montessori, we’ve created a unique timeline showcasing the incredible journeys of explorers throughout history, Timeline of Explorers and Exploration. Unlike traditional timelines that focus solely on the explorers, our timeline is organized by the continents they explored, offering a unique perspective on human curiosity and the drive to discover the unknown. This unique model provides several benefits for learners. By seeing how explorers from various backgrounds ventured to different parts of the world, children develop a broader understanding of our interconnected world. In addition, the timeline provides a chronological overview of major exploration milestones, helping students grasp the passage of time and the evolution of human knowledge across the globe.

Research Cards

To deepen children’s understanding of our rich global history, we’ve created a set of research cards. Each card is color-coded, based on the location where they exploration occurred. They feature key explorers, their voyages, and their significance in shaping our world. Children can independently explore these cards, then use them to research specific explorers and place their corresponding movable pictures on the mute timeline.

Mute Timeline & Informed Timeline

The timeline highlights the simultaneous journeys undertaken across the globe. The timeline is organized by continent, color-coded according to the Montessori color scheme (red for Europe, green for Africa, etc.,) and spans from ancient times to modern day. Key events and explorers are marked with dates, revealing a rich tapestry of human exploration. The informed timeline serves as a reference for our learners as they complete the mute timeline using movable pictures.

Timelines & Research Cards

Learners may work on one continent at a time by reading all the research cards for a specific continent and placing the corresponding pictures on the mute timeline. Once learners feel familiar with key events and key figures, they may practice using the mute timeline without the informed timeline and research cards. This practice will help them develop a chronological order of events. Learners can decide to work horizontally or vertically, meaning they may work on one continent, or on simultaneous events that occurred across the globe in a given period of time.

Timeline of Explorers and Explorations offers a unique opportunity for children to understand the progression of human discovery. The inclusion of a dedicated section for space allows for the exploration of astronomical advancements alongside terrestrial ones. Our material supports the development of key scientific skills such as chronology, sequencing, and the ability to identify cause-and-effect relationships between historical events. By engaging with this timeline, children build a foundation for understanding the scientific method and the importance of continuous exploration in expanding our knowledge of the universe.
