Hundred Board, Age 4+

The Hundred Board is a classic Montessori math material introduced to children aged four and up. The purpose of the Hundred Board is to reinforce linear counting and develop a concrete awareness of the decimal system. The Hundred Board consists of a wooden frame with a blue grid of one hundred squares and one hundred numbered tiles. Our complete sets, Hundred Board – Complete Set (Value Line) and Hundred Board – Complete Set (Premium Quality), contain additional support materials to further children’s experience with the Hundred Board and develop new number pattern awareness.  In this post, we want to share the different extensions you can expect using our Hundred Board Activity Set. There are six sections with 10-12 cards per section and visual control for errors on the back of each card.

Section A

Section A requires learners to work with specific sets of numbers. For example, learners must align all numbers from 1-50, 51-100, or all numbers with the digit 5. These patterns reinforce linear counting or help learners notice commonalities among numbers. This section is a good start for young learners who need more practice with classic work with the Hundred Board. Once, they feel comfortable using the Hundred Board, they can work with numbers in patterns.

Section B

Section B requires learners to work with numbers horizontally. Learners are invited to align rows of numbers. A starter is provided on each card to promote independence. The last cards increase in challenge by contrasting rows of numbers. Through comparison, children develop greater pattern awareness.

Section C

Section C requires learners to work with numbers vertically. Learners are invted to align columns of numbers. To ensure that learners are working in the right direction, a model is provided on the front of each card. The control of errors on the back provides an instant feedback.

Section D

Section D encourages learners to use skip counting, which lends itself to the concept of multiple. Learners are required to place every 2nd-10th tile on the board. At the end of the activity, while looking at the visual control of errors on the back, learners are visualizing the multiples of the numbers they worked with. This is a great preparation for working with the Pythagoras Board

Section E

Section E focuses on pattern creations. Each card invites learners to select specific numbered tiles and place them on the board.  Once the tiles are all placed, a pattern appears. Most of the series of numbers selected.  This way of working allows learners to observe numbers from different perspectives, in relation to one another.  For example, learners concretely observe the space between numbers in the second row and numbers in the 8th row. They can observe that smaller numbers (1, 2, 11, 12) are in the top left corner of the board, while the larger numbers are conglomerating in the bottom right corner (89, 90, 99, 100).

Section F

The front of the cards, but visual models to recreate.  This practice invites learners to recall numbers by counting along the rows and columns to find the appropriate tiles and reproduce the pattern.  It provides an opportunity to recall where the location of numbers on the board.  This implicit practice allows children to build a mental image of the Hundred Board, which is a foundational knowledge.

We are confident that your learners will make noticeable progress using our Hundred Board – Complete Set. The Complete Set offers incrementally challenging tasks that keep children engaged and learning!
