How do you ensure that children have opportunities to learn, process, repeat, and integrate knowledge? As an educational guide, you equip the learning environment with materials and multiple means to access knowledge. Oftentimes, Montessori materials are available through one medium. However, children are a diverse group of learners with different approaches to learning and should be provided various means to demonstrate knowledge and skills. The way knowledge is presented increases the chances to reach a maximum of learners but also keeps them engaged through the learning process. As a result, at Alison’s Montessori, we create multimedia for many classroom materials. We would like to put an emphasis on our complete sets of Science Charts to exemplify our way to cater to children’s various needs. Some of our latest complete sets are biomes of the world.
Our Science Charts consist of two large no-tear synthetic paper charts (one informed chart, one mute chart), and laminated cutouts with corresponding research cards. This method is effective with children of all ages and is most ideal for younger children (ages three to six). The movement component is highly engaging for young learners; it also enhances short-term memory. You will find science charts for the study of biomes and for smaller ecosystems such as Life in a Swamp, Life in a Cave, or Life in a Coral Reef.
In addition to our Science Charts, we offer wooden puzzle versions of all our science charts which is the same content explored on a smaller scale. The wooden Science Puzzles come in a variety of sizes to accommodate the content covered and contain wooden arrows and a control chart. The puzzles can be used on a table or on a mat which allows children to choose their learning environment. Each component of any puzzle can be isolated and studied along with a corresponding set of nomenclature cards.
Our Nomenclature Cards come in two different formats. The first format designed for age groups 3-6 consists of three cards: one controlled card (picture/label), one picture card, and one label. The second format designed for 6-9 or 6-12 consists of six cards: two controlled cards (picture/label and description/label), one picture card, one description card with cloze test, and two labels. 3-6 nomenclature cards provide young learners with classification exercises and vocabulary enrichment. 6-9 nomenclature cards provide elementary learners with syntactical and scientific knowledge. Our nomenclature sets consistently come with supplemental materials such as a spiral-binding book, a reproducible book, a controlled chart, and a blackline master diagram for coloring and labeling.
More recently, we created a selection of linear Life Cycle Puzzles with movable parts to expand children’s study of the life cycles of living organisms. By creating sets of puzzles with movable parts and 3D figures, we want to increase children’s engagement in learning, and augment their learning experience with life cycles. Our puzzles contain a colored control of errors on the back of each puzzle receptacle to promote more autonomy. Life Cycle Study is a very important process that children need to learn: everything has a beginning and an end, life renews itself, and repeats itself.
Among other innovative concepts, we developed are Comparative Puzzles that present specialized knowledge such as Types of Energy, Types of Roots, Types of Mushrooms, Types of Animal Body Covering, Types of Animal Movement, or Types of Animal Sensory Organs. These wooden puzzles contain parts when removed from the base, reveal the name of the concept. All puzzles can be complimented with research cards which are included in the Complete Sets. Children get an opportunity to explore concepts of their choice, compare the different types that exist such as respiratory and execratory organs, and further develop their knowledge and flexible mind.
Because we know that many Montessori materials do not get sufficient attention, our Research and Development team created numerous sets of Activity Cards and Command Cards. Most of our cards, when applicable, have a visual control on the back for control of errors. Our cards are designed by experts who have experience with scaffolding lessons so that children make noticeable progress from basic to complex concepts. Children can work independently on the material when provided control of errors which helps develop autonomy and self-confidence.
Likewise, our Language Arts materials provide extensive practice on specific content. Complete curricula such as The Pink Series, The Blue Series, The Green Series, Word Study, Mechanics of Writing, Verb Conjugation, Sentence Analysis, and Function of Words all include sets of cards and a user-friendly Instructional Guide. This type of organized system of cards ensures that children go through a wide variety of cases in a given field. Our materials are designed incrementally and may contain additional tools such as workbooks, reproducible materials, booklets, and/or track record sheets.
