The Three Branches of Government, Ages 6-9

The Three Branches of Government

We are excited to introduce you to our new Montessori-aligned and innovative materials on The Three Branches of Government! We have designed 11 Research Cards, 23 Task Cards, and a comprehensive large chart to help children explore and understand the fascinating concept of the three branches of government.

What are the three branches of government? Children will learn how the country works with The Three Branches of Government materials. They will be able to distinguish the roles and responsibilities of each branch of the government, which is a system of checks and balances. In this post, you will find suggestions for introducing the materials.

Introduction

Gather the students in a circle and hold up the informed chart. Begin by asking questions to assess their prior knowledge about the government. For example: “Have you ever wondered who makes the rules in our country?” “Do you know who the President is and what they do?” Engage the students in a brief discussion about the government, encouraging them to share their thoughts and ideas. Explain that today they will be learning about the three branches of government and how they work together.

Presenting the Informed Chart

Display the informed chart on the Three Branches of Government where all students can see it. Walk the students through each branch, explaining its name and role and giving simple examples to illustrate their functions. The chart contains enough information to which students can relate.  Encourage active participation by asking questions and allowing students to make connections.

Using the Research Cards

Use the Research Cards to provide additional information, expanding each branch’s role and responsibilities. Engage the students in short discussions after presenting each branch to reinforce understanding. After reading the research cards, you may organize them similarly to the informed chart. This practice helps children develop a mind map that helps organize knowledge and retention.

Using the Task Cards

The Task cards are a great way to review the three branches of government. They can be used individually or as a group, and they can be adapted to fit the needs of different learners. The set of Task Cards The Three Branches of Government consists of three sections, each representing a branch of the government. The questions vary in difficulty to accommodate different learners. Some of the cards require learners to follow commands which increases retention, while other cards invite learners to recall knowledge from short or long-term memory. The informed chart should be placed away from the task cards station so that learners will recruit their memory first before checking their answers.
