Sentence Analysis, Ages 6-9 & 9-12

Language

Do you remember learning about the parts of speech? Terms like subject, predicate, and direct object? Dr. Montessori knew just how to reach children when it came to grammar. She used geometrical shapes and colors to symbolize each part of speech. The same method was used to analyze phrases within a sentence. Dr. Montessori developed a system of shapes and arrows to demonstrate the relationship between words/phrases in a sentence. The shapes and colors appeal to children which helps them learn more easily.

For the longest time, the Sentence Analysis material has been approached with apprehension due to the lack of clear instructions, and the intricacy of the materials. At Alison’s Montessori, our team has developed a comprehensive user-friendly Instructional Guide that will give you the confidence to present each and every component necessary to guide children ages 6 to 12.  Sentence Analysis (6-9) and Sentence Analysis (9-12) are support materials created to be used along with the Sentence Analysis Chart and Boxes.

Montessori Sentence Analysis
Instructional Guide and Reproducible Prepared Sentences

What makes our materials Sentence Analysis 6-9 and Sentence Analysis 9-12 exceptionally effective is that they require no prior knowledge. It has been designed by professional teachers who are able to create scaffolding materials from experience. Scaffolding is an incremental educational design used to guide children from the basics to complex concepts in a cognitively respectful manner.  Our set includes colored pictures to activate the imagination and generate creative sentences. Real graphics are used to demonstrate to children that the sentences they produce can be complex and analyzed. Because children get to create their own sentences, they fully understand their meaning. When children analyze the sentences, they discover that parts of the sentence depend on one another. For instance, when we have a transitive verb, it is followed by a direct object (He rang the bell.) Children realize that each part of a sentence has a specific role, and can be classified as subject, predicate, direct object, indirect object, adverbials, attributive, and nominations.

Box 2 Contains Double-Sided Arrows to Aid Children to Transition to Using Grammatical Terminology

Let’s talk about the latter grammatical components. The terms tend to be intimidating. With our Instructional Guide, you can be guaranteed to enjoy presenting them to the children. Our colorful Instructional Guide is clearly organized to provide you with all the comfort needed to present. For each component, you are given a step-by-step visual instruction with a sentence to practice. In addition, we provide a sufficient amount of Prepared Sentences for your convenience. You may use them to present, and leave them at the children’s disposal for independent work. The material is well labeled so that children can easily select the appropriate Prepared Sentences according to the lesson they received.

Children will be delighted to find three reproducible Workbooks to further their knowledge. Workbook A is used along with labeled cards that contain eliciting questions that help children identify the parts of a sentence such as: “What is the action? Who is doing the action?” Workbook B is used along with labeled cards that contain questions using the proper grammatical terms such as “What is the subject? What is the predicate?” Through this sequence, children naturally transition to using proper grammatical terms. The last Workbook offers children opportunities for creativity. They are provided colored pictures and they create a sentence to analyze. Questions are still provided below each picture.
